Medical Forensic Exams - 0-17 Years Old

  • Children’s National Medical Center’s Child & Adolescent Protection Center (CAPC) provides medical forensic exams and mental health services for survivors of acute and non-acute sexual abuse/assault for person’s age 0-17yrs. Exams can include:

    • Comprehensive medical examination
    • Preventative medications
    • Evidence Collection
    • Mental health care

    SANE services are available 24/7 through Children’s National Emergency Department for acute medical forensic exams and evidence collection.  The forensic medical exam is provided free of charge.

    Non-acute forensic medical examinations and mental health services are available in the CAPC by appointment Monday-Friday. Appointments can be made by calling 202-476-4073. These exams are covered by health insurance or Crime Victims Compensation. Medical Forensic Exams - 12-17 Years Old

  • Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) Program
    SANE exams are conducted 24/7 at MedStar Washington Hospital Center’s Emergency Department. Exams are available to those 12 and older. 

    Exams are provided at no cost. You do not need proof of insurance. You do not need proof of citizenship. If the case does not involve a parent or caregiver, a police report is not required.

    Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) / Dating Violence 
    IPV exams are conducted 24/7 at MedStar Washington Hospital Center’s Emergency Department. Exams are available to those 12 and older.  

    Exams are provided at no cost. You do not need proof of insurance. You do not need proof of citizenship. If the case does not involve a parent or caregiver, a police report is not required.

Children’s National Medical Center – Child and Adolescent Protection Center

  • The Freddie Mac Foundation Child and Adolescent Protection Center is the only medical center in the District of Columbia with a team of health professionals dedicated to victims of child abuse and their families. The Center's team of medical professionals provides comprehensive examinations (conducted by pediatricians and nurses who specialize in forensic issues), treatment of sexually transmitted diseases or injuries, and trauma counseling for child victims of all forms of maltreatment (provided by psychologists and clinical social workers who specialize in childhood trauma and abuse).

    The Center's other services include:

    • Advocacy for victims and families
    • Psychological testing
    • Juvenile offender counseling services
    • Educational, psychological, developmental, and parent-child relationship assessments
    • Individual and family therapy for victimized children (age 4-22 years for non-offending mental health services)
    • Parenting education/therapy classes
    • Case management
    • Referral services for victims and their families

Safe Shores

  • Safe Shores—The DC Children’s Advocacy Center is a direct service nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting and working directly with child victims of sexual and physical abuse in the District of Columbia. Safe Shores provides intervention (programs include forensic services, clinical services, case management and family advocacy), hope and healing for children and families affected by abuse, trauma and violence in the District of Columbia, and prevents child abuse through education and training.

REALTalkDC

  • The REALTalkDC team links young people ages 13 to 24 years old to sexual health information, training opportunities, free condoms, HIV/STI/pregnancy testing and a safe space to be themselves.

    Hours are Monday through Friday from 3:30 pm – 7 pm during the school year and 1 pm – 7 pm during the summer.
